A distribution board, also called panel board, breaker panel or electrical panel, is an important constituent of an electricity supply system. A DB enables distribution of electrical power supply into different circuits, while providing a circuit breaker or a protective fuse for each circuit in the same enclosure. In simple terms, the main distribution board is the point where the main supply cable enters and is then subsequently distributed to the breakers and from there to all the circuits, or switch boards.
Usage
A power distribution board generally houses the main switch, circuit breakers, bus bars, earth leakage unit, bypass equipment and other switches as well. All these together help to safeguard the electrical distribution system along with connected electrical equipment from getting damaged due to various faults, such as, short circuits, overload, earth leakage, etc. The structural and technical characteristics of the electrical distribution boards may differ according to the specifications in a particular country.
Types
These days, distribution boards are available in various types, like, surface mounted, flush mounted, with single-door and double-door options, in horizontal and vertical layout, and with door as well as see-through plastic covers or doors, and in different sizes which are determined by the number of circuits (companies generally describe as number of ways or modules) rewired within the board.
